Utility Shutoff Notice? What To Do in the Next 48 Hours
Once a shutoff notice arrives, your goal is speed. Call the utility provider, ask for hold options, and apply to assistance programs the same day.

Your first call matters
Many people avoid the utility provider because they assume the answer is no. That is a mistake. Ask whether they can place a short hold on the shutoff while you apply for assistance.
Even if they cannot stop the process fully, they may offer a payment plan or partial arrangement that buys time. A short hardship letter can make that request clearer if they want it in writing.
Apply in parallel, not one by one
Do not wait for one program to reject or approve you before trying another. Submit to LIHEAP, local assistance nonprofits, and utility-specific hardship programs in parallel. If rent is also behind, layer in rent assistance programs at the same time.
You are not being dishonest by doing this. You are protecting your household from a deadline problem.
Keep a paper trail
Write down every call, email, case number, and promise. If a provider says your account was marked or a nonprofit says a pledge is pending, document it.
When you speak to the next person, those notes reduce confusion and prevent repeated delays.
